| Author's Notes: This story
isn't really part of my regular universe, but it *can* stand on its own.
I've already heard calls for a sequel.
Acknowledgments: This story wouldn't be half as good without the help of Bobbi Carothers. I pestered her to near insanity with re-write after re-write, and I am truly thankful she didn't club me. :-] And this story wouldn't have been written if it hadn't been for Phoenix; this was really supposed to be a story for her, but it turned into something totally different. This is for you, Nix! *A month ago* The computer room was dark, the monitor to Teletran-2 glowing softly as a door slowly opened, allowing a shaft of light to illuminate the console of the giant computer. Small lights began blinking, and the gentle voice of Teletran called out, "Please identify yourself." There was a series of quick footsteps, and then a small voice said, "Identify, voice command, Priority Zeta-Nine." Teletran quickly ran the codes through its enormous database, found the owner of the ID codes, and then the warning lights switched off. "User identified. Good morning, -" "Computer, keyboard access only." The computer silenced itself and a small keyboard popped out of an access panel. The small hands began rapidly typing a set of coordinates, and then typed a small message: "I'm in. Pick me up at a time of your choosing. No one gets hurt." Then, the pair of hands typed in an e-mail address, then hit 'Send'. The message disappeared, as did the coordinates, and then the hands typed in a simple deletion code. Teletran's databanks quickly erased the copied message, and then switched back to voice command. "Have a nice day."
*Present* "Daddy! Daddy! Today's my day!!" Ultra Magnus groaned as Zephyr ran up to him at full speed and crashed into his legs, wrapping her small arms around them so tightly it made his teeth ache. The Autobot city commander kneeled down and tried prying her arms off as Phoenix walked out of their bedroom, smiling. Magnus looked up at her and gave her a mock sneer. "This was your idea, remember?" The crimson femme's smile grew as she made her way over to her mate and child. "Sure was. And there's nothing you can do about it, Mags; she's already got it into her little CPU that she should celebrate the day of her birth every year. And considering how long Transformers live, that could be a while." This time, a genuine snarl twisted his features. "Thanks, Nix." Phoenix leaned over and patted him on the shoulder. "My pleasure, darling." The femme then turned to her daughter and kissed her cheek. "Happy birthday, sweetie. I'll see you later tonight." Zephyr's bottom lip stuck out and she suddenly released her father's leg, the older male sighing in relief as the young femme wailed, "I don't want you to go on my birthday! It's not fair!!" Phoenix sighed softly and just patted her cheek. "I haven't got a choice, Zeph. Mommy needs to protect all the other little ones out there from the Decepticons; maybe some other little girl has a birthday today. You wouldn't want them hurt on their birthdays, would you?" Zephyr's face drooped a little and she nodded, her hands tucking behind her and her left foot digging into the ground, as she often did when embarrassed or ashamed. Phoenix's smile returned and she leaned over to give Zephyr another peck on the cheek. "I'll see you later, hon. Have a nice day." Phoenix straightened up and turned to the doors, taking another look back as she left her family's quarters and headed for the command center. Magnus sighed as soon as the doors shut, then glanced down at Zephyr, who was still staring at the floor. His lips curled into a gentle smile and his hand reached down and cupped her chin, lifting her face up so that her large blue optics locked with his. 'So much like her mother,' he thought, his chest aching as he peered into his daughter's face. There was nothing he wouldn't do for her, and he had to squelch a sudden, strong urge to call in a favor from Kup to pull Phoenix off duty today. But, all that would gain him was an extra day of duty for either him or Nix, plus Phoenix herself would be mighty pissed. So here he was, looking down at his now four year old daughter, on the day of her birth, having to tell her that now he too had to go on duty. "Zeph," he began, his voice gentle as Zephyr's bright blue optics began to cloud over with unshed tears, her lower lip trembling slightly as Magnus towered over her. The toddler had heard this tone before; the "I don't want to go, but I have to" tone. The young femme's lip trembled even more as her face screwed up into one of anger; not a tantrum, but real, intense anger. It was a sight rarely seen on Zephyr's face, but when it was, it was serious. Magnus abruptly stopped talking, all thoughts leaving his CPU as he stared down at his daughter. 'I can't do this to her,' he thought, his optics widening and his chest tightening with dread as Springer's older daughter suddenly popped into his mind. 'She'll turn out like Deathangel, hating both of us for constantly leaving her behind with strangers- no, scratch that. Spring and 'Cee aren't strangers, but they're not her parents. They're not *us*.' Magnus sighed softly and his hand gently stroked Zephyr's cheek, which brought a look of astonishment across her face, which was shaped so much like her mother. Smiling, the city commander reached over with his other hand and flipped the comm switch, dialing in Kup's office line and waiting patiently while it kept buzzing. On the sixth ring, the screen switched on and Kup's grizzled features filled the screen, his face twisted in sour irritation and his optics were glowing slightly. Kup uttered a muffled curse as his optics lifted towards the screen. "What is it, Magnus?" the war veteran asked, his voice carrying a sharp edge. "Sorry for interupting you, Kup, but I need to take today off. You see, Zephyr's birth-" "Fine, fine," Kup said, his hand waving dismissively as Blade's arm moved off-screen. "I'll notify Prime and get Roddy to take over your work." Blade's face appeared on the screen, her mouth a straight line and her voice even as she said, "I could have Goldbug or Blaster cover for your mate, if you wish." Magnus saw Kup glaring at Blade, his lips twisted into an irritated scowl as he tapped his finger impatiently. Magnus smiled and said, "No, that won't be necessary Blade. Thanks anyway." Blade nodded and said, "As you wish, Commander. Is there anything else?" Magnus shook his head. Blade nodded curtly and said, "Good day." Magnus' screen went blank and he straightened his frame and smiled. 'Well,' he mused. 'I suppose telling him that I forgot to type up the annual energy commisions report is out.' His earlier smile became a tight grin as he thought, 'Looks like Roddy has some typing to do.' Magnus looked back down at Zephyr, whose tears were now gone and a hint of hope was flickering in her optics. Magnus' smile widened and he said to her, "Guess what, hon? Daddy doesn't have to work today; you and I can have fun while Mommy works." Zephyr's face broke into a huge grin and she happily cried out, "Yay!!!" Zephyr ran over and hugged her father's legs, her face beaming as Magnus stroked her small helmet armor. The city commander leaned down and pried her arms off his legs, looking her square in the optics and grinning like an idiot. "So, what would you like to do today?" Zephyr tilted her head to the side, her tiny face wrinkling up in deep thought as Magnus fought to keep from laughing; others had commented that she was a spitting image of him. Although it was true, Zephyr had all the personality quirks of her mother. And right now, Zephyr was emulating the trademark Phoenix-in-deep-thought pose. After a few seconds, Zephyr looked at him again and her smile was back. "Optima told me about this new park that was opening up near here! Can we go, Daddy??" Magnus frowned in puzzled confusion. "Hon, that park is scaled for *human* size; we're both too big for that place! How 'bout we just walk around the forest here and-" "No Daddy! Optima said it won't be open for very long, and I wanna go before it closes!" Magnus sighed. This was turning into one of those Pandora's box situations. If he kept insisting that they not go, the more insistant and stubborn Zephyr would get. Another famous trait from her mother. He looked down at Zephyr again, and a little voice inside his CPU chimed, 'Oh for Primus' sake, just take her! It's her birthday, let the little tyke get some amusement for once.' Magnus' smile returned and he said, "Okay Zeph, let's go to the park. But on one condition: we have to be careful. There will be humans around us, and we don't want to hurt them, okay? So try and show a little restraint, all right?" Zephyr squealed in excitement and her tiny head bobbed up and down. "Yay!! Daddy, can Optima come? Please, Daddy?? It was her suggestion." Magnus was just straightening up when Zephyr mentioned Optima, Springer and Arcee's green bundle of pure energy. 'No,' he thought miserably, 'not Optima. She'd accidentally step on a few humans on her way to the rides. *That* would make for some interesting PR.' Out loud Magnus said, "Honey, maybe Optima is busy today. We could do something with her after the park, maybe go to a museum-" "But Daddy! You said we could do anything I wanted, and I want to go to the park with Optima!" Her pouting face returned and Magnus' head started to throb. 'You really done it now,' the voice taunted. 'Now she'll never let up.' 'Shut up!' he hissed at it,
only to be rewarded with sharp laughter. Magnus shook his head and sighed
in resignation. "Alright, Zeph, let's go get Optima." Zephyr ran towards
the door, which whisked open for her as she flew by, her father a few steps
behind her as she dashed/jogged her way to Springer's quarters. 'Please,'
Magnus pleaded, his heavy footsteps echoing in the wide hallways as he
chased his daughter, 'let them have other plans with her today.'
The two reached Springer's quarters at about fifteen past eight, and Magnus let Zephyr ring the buzzer, after he picked her up high enough to reach it. They heard muffled shouting inside, and Magnus leaned closer so he could hear, knowing it wasn't exactly the best thing to do. "You always coddle her, Spring! No matter what she wants to do, you let her do it anyway, even when I say she can't! I really hate it when you undermine my decisions!" "In case you didn't notice 'Cee, she's *my* daughter too! Besides, you're too strict with her! She needs to have a lot of contact with humans if she's going to remain here. We can't just expect her to immediately accept them as equals if she hasn't spent any time with them!" "Fine! Then *you* explain to her why she was attacked! When you're finished, let me know so I can start overreacting again!" "Cee, you're not being fair!" "So when has that ever stopped you before?" Magnus heard some heavy footsteps, and he had just enough time to move himself and Zephyr from the door before it whisked open and the pink femme marched out of the room. Magnus peered into the room and saw Springer sitting on the couch, his head in his hands and looking very tired. Magnus rapped twice on the door frame and the triple changer looked up, his optics dim and small dark circles underneath them. Magnus blinked back surprise; he had never seen Springer look so tired. "Hey, Mags. C'mon in." Magnus took a step in and gave his friend a sheepish smile. "I'm not intruding on anything, am I?" Springer shook his head and waved them in. Magnus walked inside, Zephyr behind him, and they both walked towards the couch. Zephyr was silent, her head swaying from side to side, obviously looking for her friend. Springer saw her and his smile drooped slightly. "Hey, Zeph." The small femme's head jerked to his direction and she smiled brightly. "Hi Unca Springa. Is Opti here?" The triple changer's frame straightened a bit. "Yeah, she's in her room. Go on in, she should be awake." Zephyr's head bobbed excitedly and she ran towards the room which sat in between a window and the energon dispensor. When the doors parted and Zephyr vanished, Magnus walked around the couch and sat beside Springer, whose frame drooped when the little girl left. "What's wrong, Spring? I've never seen you look so worn out before." Springer sighed and just shook his head. "It's nothing, Mags, just a little disagreement with Arcee." Magnus wriggled in the seat a bit, the couch creaking under his weight as he said, "Care to talk about it?" The corner of Springer's mouth twisted up and a gleam entered his optics. "Not really. She'll get over it, she just needs to stomp around the base a little, maybe slam a few doors. She'll come back in a few hours, apologize, then things'll be back to normal." The triple changer shrugged and then glanced sideways at Mags, his expression regaining its usual lightness as he asked, "So, what brings you and Zeph over here? Thought you and Nix were on duty?" Magnus smiled and cleared his throat. "Well, I *was* on-duty today, but....Nix told Zephyr about the human custom of celebrating birthdays, and naturally-" "Zephyr wants to celebrate it as well. Mags, someone needs to clue you guys in on the simple fact that you don't have to tell your kids *every* little Earth custom. Then they'll pester you until hell cracks about *them* wanting to do the same thing, etc., etc." Magnus smiled. "Tell me about it. For two weeks Zephyr has been asking the same question: 'Is it today? Is it today? Is it today?' I think Phoenix deliberately did that so Zephyr would annoy me while she was doing paperwork and drilling recruits." Springer chuckled softly as Magnus leaned back in the couch, raising his arms up to the ceiling as he rested his head on the soft cushion. Springer also leaned back, his hands going beneath his head as the laughter doubled in the other room. "Yeah, Nix always did have a twisted sense of humor. Just the way she was programmed, I guess. Either that, or the tech assembling her brain unit had his arm jiggled, or something." Magnus laughed, his CPU conjuring up an image of Phoenix ripping off Springer's limbs for such a comment. He told Springer this, and the triple changer merely remarked, "Hey, I'm used to her tirades. Besides," he added, his optics twinkling with mischief, "I can run faster than her." Just then Zephyr poked her head over the doorjam and she asked, "Daddy, can she come?" Springer looked over at Magnus and arched an optic ridge, his mouth twitching into a smile. Magnus switched off his optics and moaned softly, his head beginning to ache again. He quickly switched his optics back on and looked at Springer, pure desperation in his features. "Spring, Zephyr wants Optima to go with us to the new park a few miles from here. But, I'm sure you and Opti have other plans....?" The look that Springer gave him made his fuel pump sink all the way to his holding tanks. "Not really." Springer looked over at Zephyr, and then his deep voice bellowed, "Opti, you wanna go with Zeph and Mags to the park?" Magnus shook his head as his audios rang while Optima bounded out of her room, Zephyr in tow, and stopped at Springer and Magnus' feet. "Can I, Dad? Are you sure
Mom isn't going to be angry?" That same gleam sprang into his optics and
he said, "Nah, Mom'll be thrilled. Besides, you and Zeph need to go out
and get some fresh air, all this canned stuff'll drive you nuts." Springer
looked over at Magnus and said, "You guys better get going if you want
to beat the crowds." Magnus glared at Springer and mouthed "Thanks a lot",
but out loud he said, "Okay kids, let's get going." Optima and Zephyr raced
over to the door, Optima running over and giving her father a hug before
chasing after Zephyr, then Magnus hastily told Springer he would return
with Optima before noon, to which Springer replied, "Hey, no rush. You
guys take your time and enjoy yourselves." Springer cupped his hands to
his mouth and yelled, "Happy birthday, Zeph!!", and that earned him a faint
"Thanks", along with some muffled curses when the two came in contact with
another Autobot. Magnus shot off another glare at Springer before he bounded
out of the large room and started jogging towards the two little girls,
praying to every deity he knew of that this day would hurry up and end.
Magnus marveled at the size of the park as Optima and Zephyr stood quietly (for once) at his side. Off to the distance, the Autobot city commander spotted three full size ferris wheels, and beside them were two smaller ones. He could also see four merry-go-rounds, two roller coasters, and various rides and games scattered in between. What was even more surprising was the fact that even though it was 11 a.m., the entire park was deserted of humans. Not one laughing child, not one weary parent, not even one vendor hawking his game or ride. 'I could've sworn it was open by now,' he mused, glancing down at Zephyr and Optima, carefully watching their reactions. Zephyr looked up at him and said, "Where are all the humans, Daddy? I thought they liked doing these kinds of things." Magnus opened his mouth to say something when someone else did it for him. "They do. It's just we have some special visitors today." Magnus looked down and saw someone walking towards them, its body covered in a dark cloak, the hood covering its eyes and the baggy folds covering any details of its body. The small human stopped right in front of the three Autobots and the head tilted up towards him. Slowly, a pair of covered hands reached up and pulled the hood away, revealing a face that was most definitely *not* human. "Hello. You must be Ultra Magnus, and those two little ones must be Zephyr and Optima." The alien, who was female, smiled at the two girls and then turned back to Magnus. "Springer called me while you were on your way down here; he wanted this to be....*special* for you." Magnus narrowed his optics at her and carefully studied her. Her face was dark lavendar, which was framed by dark burgundy hair as it spilled down to her shoulders. Her hair was kept out of her face by two small horns, which jutted from her forehead and ended in fine points. Her lips were dark blue and they curled into a smile. But the weirdest feature were her eyes. She had no pupils, no discernible iris, but instead they were jet black orbs on her face, seeming to look into the deepest recesses of his soul. Magnus suppressed a shudder as she kept staring up at him. Her figure was lean, hips curved in just the right places, but the cloak still covered the rest of her body. Magnus shook himself out of his study of her and smiled. "You seem to know Springer pretty well, although I'm at a loss as to how you two met, uh, Miss....?" The woman laughed softly and her black eyes blinked. "My name is Trista; as to how I met up with Springer, that's for another time." Trista looked over at Optima and Zephyr, who remained quiet the entire time, and her smile deepened as she peered at Zephyr. "Let me guess: you're the birthday girl, right?" Zephyr nodded and Trista patted her arm. "Well, then, let's get started with our little 'party', shall we?" Magnus frowned as the woman started walking off to the far north of the park, both Zephyr and Optima starting to follow. "What party? Trista! What party?!" Her laughter floated back to him as she said, "You'll see...." Magnus' optics narrowed to tiny slits as he watched the woman walk down the jagged path of the park. Zephyr immediately followed after her, while Optima turned her frame over towards Magnus and said, "Coming Uncle Mags?" The larger Autobot shook his head and sighed. "I don't like this. Something isn't right. Even if Springer had a surprise for us, he would have at least told me about it." Optima smiled and waved a hand. "Aww, you know Dad; he's always up for a good prank. C'mon, we're gonna lose 'em!" Optima started after Trista and Zeph as Magnus lingered behind. 'This isn't right,' he mused, his holding tanks twisting nervously. 'Springer would have told me about this woman; at the *least* he would have told Nix.' Magnus rumbled nervously as he began to jog towards the rapidly growing specks in the distance. He kept on going as the grass and plants got higher and wilder. Magnus opened his comm link and prepared a channel to Metroplex just as the woman stopped near a small hill. "Go on ahead, girls, the party is just down this mound." Zephyr started down the hill when Optima reached out and grabbed her friend, alarming Magnus even more. "Wait, Zeph, it's not safe!" Magnus turned to address the woman, but found that she had disappeared. He reacted on instinct and drilled in responses; "Zeph, Opti, RUN!!" The gunfire started right then, Zephyr shrieking as Magnus jumped towards her and shoved both girls into the dirt, his own body landing on top of them. He summoned his weapon from subspace and started firing wildly in front of him, Zephyr's muffled screams spurring him on. Optima struggled underneath him, her arms flailing around as she tried digging out from under his body. Magnus saw a row of shadows, each of various sizes and armed with different weapons. A familiar shriek reached his audios from the flank of 'Cons, but a stray blast sent his head back into the dirt. Optima let loose an incredible boost of strength and actually managed to shove him off, her tiny legs carrying the same wallop as her father's, and she stood up and started waving her arms in the air. Magnus reached up and grabbed her by the waist, his normally calm voice hissing at her, "Stop it! You're going to get shot!" Optima snarled and started wriggling in his grip, stray shots blasting everywhere around them as she said, "No! She wouldn't let them hurt me!" Magnus grunted as he pulled her down next to Zephyr, who was shaking from helmet to toe and tears were falling down her face. Magnus looked both girls deep in the optics and said, "Now listen to me. We're going to get out of this, but I want you both to listen to me: both of you stay here and keep low; I'm going to try and talk us out of this." Optima vigorously shook her head and hissed, "No! She won't listen to anyone but me! Let me go over there and talk to her!" "Talk to who, Opti?" Zephyr asked, her voice shaking as her optics darted to all the blast marks on the grass, plasma bolts sailing over their heads as Magnus sighed in frustration. "Opti, I know how you feel, but this is not the time! She won't listen to anyone, you should know that! Your parents-" "Never gave her a chance! Please Uncle Mags, let me talk to her!" "No! Now you two stay here and keep low!" Magnus started crawling around the hill, dirt catching up into his joints and grinding along the sensitive relays, causing Magnus to curse under his breath as he kept crawling through the dirt, the hot plasma rays grazing past his body as he reached the end of the slope. He carefully peered over the hill, trying to see how many Decepticons he was facing when Zephyr's sharp cry tore into his thoughts. Magnus looked back their way and his holding tanks immediately froze. Optima was standing on top of the hill, her arms raised up above her head and waving frantically in the air. She was shouting something, but Magnus couldn't hear over the sounds of laser fire. Magnus screamed at Optima to get down, but the girl didn't respond, didn't even look at him. He started scuffling towards them when a dark shape flew past him and circled around, then transformed into a sleek shape that gracefully touched down in front of Optima. The laser fire abruptly stopped and, without thinking, Magnus jumped to his feet and ran towards the two girls and the other robot. "Get away from them!" he screamed, his blaster levelled at the robot's head, then something caught his feet and he landed flat on his face, something hard pressing against the back of his head. Magnus froze, his thoughts turning to Zephyr as the object pressed itself harder against his head. He heard soft footsteps running up towards him and a voice hissed, "Get that away from him! We didn't come here to kill anyone, we came here to pick up my sister!" Magnus' circuits went numb as the now identified Deathangel kneeled down to him and gripped his arm, lifting him up with impossible strength. Magnus shook off her hand and scrambled to his feet, whirling around to face the woman who led them into the trap. "Why did you do this?! Decepticons hate organics!" Trista smiled and holstered her blaster, which looked too big and too heavy for a humanoid to handle. Her burgandy hair whipped around her face as she said, "Life is just full of surprises. Right, 'Angel?" Deathangel smiled down at Trista, then she looked up at Magnus and said, "I'm not here to cause any trouble, Magnus. I'm just here for my sister. If you don't do anything stupid, then neither you or your daughter will be harmed." "I'm not letting you take Optima! She doesn't want to go with you!" Magnus lunged towards Deathangel, but the femme was much too fast for him. She stepped to the right and slammed her elbow down on Magnus' back, just as he sailed past her. He skidded to a halt in front of Zephyr and groaned, his internals giving him the damage reports as the pain receptors in his back protested each move. Magnus groaned and slowly sat up, his arm wrapping around Zephyr in a protective embrace as Deathangel, Trista, and four more Decepticons walked towards them. Optima didn't move as Deathangel stepped up to her and wrapped her arm around her shoulders. "Tell them, sister, so we may leave this place." Optima looked over at Magnus and Zephyr, her posture stiff and her optics glowing with determination. She took a step forward and looked Magnus right in the optics, and with a voice belying her age she said, "I'm going with them. I'm going to become a Decepticon." Magnus' optics widened and his jaw dropped, his now nerveless fingers dropping his blaster as Zephyr just stared ahead. The Autobot commander shook his head and his optics now dimmed with pain. "Why? I thought you were happy here, with your parents and friends? Why are you doing this?" Each word was spoken softly, but carried with it an agony beyond description. His very essence throbbed painfully and his fuel pump felt like it weighed a ton, and he could no longer look Optima in the face. The young girl shook her head and said, "How can you ask me that, after all the things the humans said about us? They call us soulless monstrosties, metal Frankensteins that rain death and destruction upon them and their world. "We risk our lives for them and what does it gain us?! Nothing but hatred and abuse! I've been alone with them, Uncle Magnus, and for every person who smiled up at me, there were ten others who called me a monster and threw everything from pipes, bricks, and wrenches to even trying to ram me with their cars! And when my parents learned of it, all they said was that the humans were 'misguided'. Well, I'm not! I'm tired of seeing Mom and Dad near-death from trying to save as many humans as they could, and still being called monsters and cursed for even functioning! I'm not going to spend my lifetime coddling those who would treat us so badly!" Magnus shook his head and looked up at her, his face clouded with not anger, but immense sadness. "Your sister has correpted you already; you sound exactly like her. And Megatron." Deathangel sneered at him and stepped up to Optima, whose face was streaked with angry tears as she glared hatefully at her surrogate Uncle. "Let's go, sister. There's no way to talk any sense to them." Deathangel pulled Optima away, the other Decepticons taking to the air as Trista fired up a jet pack and soared with them. Deathangel transformed into her fighter jet and Optima climbed on top. Deathangel began to fire up her engines when a soft voice said "I thought you were my friend." Optima looked back at Zephyr, who stared sadly at her as Deathangel waited silently. "I am, Zeph." Optima said. "I just hope someday that you'll understand, maybe even join me. Believe it or not, Megatron isn't the monster you think he is." Zephyr's optics flashed angrily and she screamed "NEVER!!" Optima looked away, another
tear slipping down her face as Deathangel fired up her engines and they
took off. Optima didn't look back as she held on to her sister tightly,
the wind pressing against her as they climbed higher into the afternoon
sky.
It was now after dark, the moon cresting high in the dark sky as millions of stars blotted across the Oregon coast. Inside Metroplex, Magnus sat inside his family quarters, his laptop sitting on the table right in front of him as the monitor glowed softly. After the encounter at the park, he had had to report back and tell the news to Springer and Arcee, who nearly ran over the much taller Magnus to get her daughter back. It took her mate's strong arms and soothing words to keep her from doing just that, and then the couple retreated to their quarters for some privacy. Prime had then grilled Magnus on the incident, Zephyr standing in a corner and sobbing silently. Magnus had kept an optic on her, always comforting her whenever her tears became too overwhelming. And now, Magnus was sitting in his dark living room, the laptop whirring softly as he listened to the commotion down the hall. Even though his and Springer's quarters were separated by a long hallway from each other, he could still hear the tortured sobs of both Arcee and Springer, and it broke his fuel pump even more. Sighing softly, Magnus reached over and flipped the laptop off, closing the lid down and leaning back into the couch, his hands resting behind his head. Ever since the news broke, Phoenix had been either comforting Arcee, plotting revenge against Megatron with Springer, or actively scouting the underwater Decepticon base. So far, all three activities has proved only one thing: Optima was never coming back, and Phoenix had the singed wings to prove it. "Daddy?" Magnus looked over at the source of the question and found himself staring into the frightened optics of his daughter. Her head was drooping, her shoulders hunched, and there were two fresh streaks of tears on her face as Magnus sat up and patted the cushion next to him. Zephyr walked up and climbed onto the sofa, her head automatically resting against Magnus' chest as he wrapped his huge arm around her shoulders. He gave her a gentle squeeze and smiled. "Why are you still up, Zeph?" Zephyr sighed, a gust of hot breath tickling Magnus' chest as she looked up and asked, "Is Uncle Springer mad at me?" Magnus' startled frown gazed down at her and he asked, "Why would you think that?!" "Because I made Optima go away. I was the one who wanted her to go with us so badly." Magnus shifted his body around and wrapped his other arm around her, his optics dimming darkly as he hugged her fiercely. "No honey, Springer isn't mad at you. It wasn't your fault. It just happened, and now there's nothing we can do about it." Zephyr's body shook as the little girls sobbed pleas reached his audios. "But I..... told her..she could..come...." Magnus felt small streaks of wetness fall onto his chest and he hugged her even tighter, his own optics beginning to mist over as his own pain began to surface. "It's not your fault," he said again, his voice wavering slightly as Zephyr pulled away and looked up at him. "It's no one's fault. And I'm sorry it happened on your birthday." Magnus wiped away the tears on her cheek with his index finger and he smiled gently at her. "I'm sure Optima is being taken care of. Her sister would never allow any harm to come to her." "But why, Daddy? Why would Optima want to become a Decepticon?!" Magnus rubbed his knuckles
between her helmet antannae and sighed. "I wish I knew, Zeph. I wish I
knew."
